Welcome
to the Southgate Public Library Website!
History
1895 The first library was known as the Dundalk Mechanics Institute. The library was housed in various buildings.
1969 A bequest from Ruth Pearl
Hargrave for the amount of $50,000 was given to the Town of Dundalk for
"the construction of a library in my name which must be two stories high,
brick walls and located on Main Street East." The building was completed in
1970.
2000 When the Village
of Dundalk amalgamated in 2000 the library's official name became The Township
of Southgate Ruth Hargrave Memorial Library.
CURRENTLY
the Southgate Public Library is managed by a Library
Board comprised of five members who live in the
community. Board meetings are usually held on the 3rd Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m.
and are open to the public.
The Librarian-CEO looks after the day-to-day operations of the library.
