COMING SOON: A NEW LIBRARY

expected opening date june 1st 2010

The township has received Infrastructure Stimulus Funding to build a NEW LIBRARY. The new facility will contain a Library, OPP office, EDC office and a Food Bank.

Location: on the side of the former Marshall's Feed Mill

construction start date: September 14, 2009

History

1895 The first library was known as the Dundalk Mechanics Institute. The library was housed in various buildings.

1969 A bequest from Ruth Pearl Hargrave for the amount of $50,000 was given to the Town of Dundalk for "the construction of a library in my name which must be two stories high, brick walls and located on Main Street East." The building was completed in 1970.

2000 When the Village of Dundalk amalgamated in 2000 the library's official name became The Township of Southgate Ruth Hargrave Memorial Library.

CURRENTLY the Southgate Public Library is managed by a Library Board comprised of five members who live in the community. Board meetings are usually held on the 3rd Monday of each month at 6:30 p.m. and are open to the public.

The Librarian-CEO looks after the day-to-day operations of the library.
